December 6-10

Concert week!

Instrumental Winter Concert- Thursday, December 9, 7:00 PAC.  More info here

Monday and Tuesday we will rehearse as normal.  On Wednesday, we will move into the PAC and rehearse on the stage in all ensembles Wednesday and Thursday.  On Thursday, the call time for all students is 6:00.  We will take our ensemble photos for the yearbook before the concert, so it is important for all students to arrive dressed in their performing attire on time.  The PAC will be closed to audience members until the photos are all taken.  I hope to open the PAC to audience members by 6:40.

Again, I want to stress to students and families the importance of academic success in all classes.  Students must have a 2.0 GPA with not more than 2 F's to be eligible to perform.  I will check grades on Wednesday morning and ineligible students will be pulled from rehearsal at that time.  Ineligible students are required to attend the concert, dressed in their attire and will complete an alternate assignment to earn back credit.  There is no excused absence for any student for any reason.  A student who misses this concert is likely to earn an F for the semester.  Check the Instrumental Music Handbook for more info.

A special thanks to those parents who came out to our December booster meeting!  I want to stress again, we cannot be successful as a program without active parent involvement.  Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 6 at 7:30 in the Faculty Dining Room.  I've recently added new information, including past minutes so be sure to check out my Music/ Drama Booster page.

Students are now working toward their semester final.  Orchestra students are required to perform two octave F, C, G, D, A & E major scale and arpeggio.  Other students will perform selected scales and excerpts from their literature.

The Live Review form is due on Friday.  Some students have asked to attend performances this upcoming weekend, so I will accept work on time until Monday, December 13.  There have been many performances lately, and there are many this week and weekend.  I hope you have been able to take advantage of these.

See you at the concert on Thursday at 7!

November 29- December 3

I hope that you and your family had a good time together this Thanksgiving holiday.

Time is flying by and we are quickly approaching the half way mark in the year, and that means it's time for our Winter Concerts!  Every instrumental student will perform- Beginning Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and String Orchestra all perform on Thursday, December 9 at 7:00 in the PAC.  The call time for all students is 6:00 in room 107.  In all ensembles except Beginning Band, students are to wear their ensemble dress and tuxedo.  For Beginning Band, students wear concert black.  That means males wear black dress shoes, dress slacks and a white button up dress shirt; a tie is optional.  Females may choose to wear a dress/ skirt that falls below the knees when seated or elegant black slacks and top.  If you have questions about appropriate performing attire, contact me ASAP.  With our first formal performance comes a reminder about grades- students must be academically eligible to perform (2.0 minimum GPA with not more than 2 F's).  If a student's grades are too low, the student is still required to attend the performance, but will be required an alternate assignment.  There is NO excused absence for any student for any reason from our performance.  Students who miss this performance may fail the ensemble for the semester.

The Music/ Drama Boosters meeting will be Thursday night at 7:30.  I urge you to attend.  We cannot be successful without a strong contingent of parent support at our booster meetings.  So far, attendance has been scarce at best.  The agenda will be along these lines- 7:30 booster business, 7:40 teacher announcements, 7:50 parent planning and feedback time.  If you are a parent of a freshman or sophomore (not excluding juniors and seniors, but you will be graduating soon, too), we need you there!  Immediately following the Booster meeting will be our Big Band Dance committee meeting.  We are also looking for Wind Ensemble & Jazz Band parents who can help carry on the work now being done by parents whose students are juniors and seniors.  It's a great group to work with and with everyone doing their part, no single role is too daunting.

Our tour plans for LA 2010 are coming along well.  All students and chaperones should have paid at least $150 toward the tour costs by this point.  We have had a few students join us in the recent weeks, and we are looking for several more chaperones.  It is an important job and we cannot travel without enough adults- but I try to keep it fun too!  If you'd like more info, let me know or ask at our upcoming booster meeting.  For all the info, go to the Tour 2011 page.

Have you gone to see and review a live performance yet?  There are several performances this week.  Be sure to check my Live Music page for more information about outside performances as well as the form to complete.

November 22-24

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is a short week, made shorter because I will be out Monday at an all day required district training. Students will rehearse in their ensemble with Mr. Roberts.

All students received an account statement last week. If you have not seen this account statement, please ask your student about it. All charges and payments should be listed and the bottom line is labeled "Net Account Total." All students participating in the tour to LA should see a $500 charge and currently have a Net Account Total of $-350, the outstanding balance for tour. Those not participating in the trip should see a Net Account Total of $0. Students should see every payment and charge made. If you see a charge you don't understand or see a problem with a payment you made, please contact me immediately. If your student doesn't know about the account statement, email me and I can send you an electronic copy. Remember that all payments should be made to "Pioneer Music & Drama Boosters."

Our Winter Concert is scheduled for Thursday, December 9 at 7:00 pm. Please be sure to invite your friends and family. All instrumental ensembles will perform.

Don't forget about our Live Review assignment! It's due December 10. I've updated the Live Music page with several performances which you might wish to take advantage of.

Would you like a video of the Veterans Day program? DVD order forms are in my classroom, and videos cost $20. Order forms are not available online.

I wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving holiday!

November 15-19

Congratulations to the Pioneer Performing Arts for a wonderful Veterans Day tribute!  The PAC was packed to standing room only, with the audience spilling out the back door into the quad.  The audience was treated to a thoughtful, moving tribute to our country and those who have served her.
PHS Orchestra
PHS Wind Ensemble

PHS Jazz Band

Football season is now over.  All students should return their flip folders with all pep band music to me.  I will file all of the music so that next fall it is all ready for distribution.

This week is a little lighter, but there are still some key activities to be aware of.  The second payment for our LA Tour is now past due.  All participants, including parent chaperones, should have turned in $150 so far.  Checks can be made out to "Pioneer Music & Drama Boosters." If you have questions about the details of our trip, please see the tour page here.

To offset some of the costs of our program, students are able to participate in fund raising opportunities.  The first round of our first fund raiser is going on now.  Students who have their grab bag of coffee and cookie mix should collect all money ($12 coffee/ $13 cookie mix) and turn it in to me by Friday.  Checks should be made payable to "Pioneer Music & Drama Boosters."  Did you miss out on the first round, but still hope to participate and make some money?  Review this fundraising form and submit it by this Friday.  For those who join us this time, we anticipate delivery of the product in early December, with plenty of time to distribute items before the Christmas holiday season.

A plug for our Boosters club- we need parents!  In an effort to connect more parents, we may change our meeting format.  If it would help attract more involvement, we will start at 7:30.  The agenda would generally follow this format- 7:30-7:40 general booster management and budget information, 7:40-7:50 program specific information from the directors (instrumental, vocal, drama), 7:50-8:00 parent brainstorming & project work time.  Then at 8:00, each discipline would have time to work with their director for more specific planning.  This means the meetings would be 30 minutes each month, with integrated time for parent feedback and involvement.  For band, we would follow the meeting with a Big Band Dance planning meeting.  We have a great need for parent involvement.  If you find this schedule more helpful for your involvement, let us know so that we can set our schedule accordingly.  Our next meeting is Thursday, December 2.

If you are looking ahead, our next performance is Thursday, December 9 at 7:00.  All instrumental groups will perform.  I have encouraged several more advanced students to consider auditioning for the Santa Clara County Honor Band. Those auditions are December 10.  We will then have our Big Band Dance on February 5.

Don't forget that your Live Review is due on December 10.  Get more info about this assignment, as well as the worksheet on the Live Music section of my site.

Finally, all dresses should be delivered this week.  Girls are reminded that they owe $65 if they haven't paid yet.  Also, there are about 12 boys who have yet to pay for their tux.  I have already paid for them and need families to either pay right away or make arrangements with me for a payment schedule.  If a family needs extra financial aid, I can arrange that if you contact me.

November 8-12

It's been a busy few weeks here at Pioneer!  On Friday, October 29, the Mustangs won the homecoming game against Leigh- go Mustangs!  This morning, the Jazz Band performed at the annual West Valley College Jazz Festival and did a great job.  Thanks to Mrs. Linvill, Mrs. Kanga, Mrs. Canteenwala, Mrs. Grimaud, and Mrs. Higa for driving us.  Next week will be our Veteran's Day Tribute performance as well as the final football game of the year.

Monday- another box of dresses will arrive.  Please assure proper fit of your dress immediately and make needed alterations quickly so that as many girls as possible can wear their ensemble dress for the Veteran's Day performance.

Also on Monday the first round of coffee/ cookie mix will be delivered from the We Care Coffee Company for the fundraiser.  The students who requested to participate in writing will receive their materials Monday after school.  Please sell the product as quickly as possible.  All payments for materials should be made to "Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters."  Any student who would like to order additional materials or who would like to participate for the first time will be able to place an additional order by Monday, November 29.  Those who participate in this round will take delivery prior to the Christmas holiday and will be able to sell over the break.  If you missed out on round one and would like to join us, or just want to sell more, the order form is online here.

Veteran's Day Tribute, Wednesday
2:30-4:30 mandatory rehearsal in the PAC (7th period students excused from the rehearsal)
6:15 all student call time dressed in room 107.
7:00 program begins
After the program all students must first strike the stage into room 107, then they will be dismissed from the band room.  We ask that families bring a plate of cookies or similar snack food for this event.  As a free event open to the community, we want to put our best foot forward and welcome them to Pioneer and thank those veterans who have served.  A reminder about attire- all boys must be in tuxes and all girls should be in their current ensemble dress.  If a girl's dress is not yet in, she may wear last year's dress or elegant concert black.  Skirts/ dresses must fall below the knee when seated and the blouse/ top must cover the shoulder.  Slacks are also acceptable.

Also on Wednesday- LA Tour Payment #2 of $100 is due.  All students who have paid the deposit and turned in the contract should continue to make these payments.  In order for us to pay our travel company, we must to have money from all participants.  We are still looking for several chaperones.  If you are interested, contact me or submit your deposit and contract.  Students who have not yet paid a deposit may still join us with a $150 payment and submission of the Tour Contract.  All tour info is on my blog.

Friday, November 12 is our final home football game of the 2010 season.  I know that the students are out of class that day, but we will still perform for our football team.  Call time is 6:00 in room 107 as usual.

A reminder about money- all students must pay for their performing attire!  Tuxes are $125 and dresses $65.  Students who did not take advantage of the current fundraiser are expected to make payment in full or in part right away.  Students who would like to make payments need to make those arrangements with me directly as soon as possible.

October 25-29

Homecoming Week!
This Friday is homecoming and a 50 year all Pioneer reunion.  From 4:30-6:30 in the quad, there will be activities and groups representing both current groups and groups from Pioneer's past.  The football game will kick off at 7:00 against Leigh.  The Music boosters will be out there soliciting support from alumni and connecting past performers with our current ensembles.  Please invite your friends and neighbors who may have attended Pioneer.  Band students have a 6:00 call time.

Next week, Jazz Band will participate in the West Valley Jazz Festival.  We will depart Pioneer after 1st period (about 8:30) and return during 5th period (about 1:00).  We need parent drivers!  If you have turned in driver forms to the office, let me know.  If you need driver forms, I can get those to you.  We are looking for seats for 22 students.  I would like to know this week which parents will be driving us so that we aren't scrambling at the last minute.  Students should not drive themselves.

The following week is our Veterans' Day tribute as well as our last football game.  The Veterans' Day tribute will feature students from across the Performing Arts, including Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band.  There will be an after school rehearsal before the show.  Curtain will be at 7:00 on Wednesday, November 10.  Then, even though there is no school, we will perform at the last football game of the year on November 12.  As this is the last home game of the year, it will be senior night- the night when all the seniors will be recognized.

All students will need to see one live performance each semester.  Acceptable performances include high school, college, community or professional ensembles within the students own discipline- bands, orchestra or jazz.  I have created a Live Music page on this site with links to outside groups to help you find opportunities to see live music.  If you have suggestions of groups I can link to, please let me know.  For more info, and to get the assignment PDF, go to the Live Music page on my site.

A reminder to the following boys- Michael, Devin, Steven, Orlando, Devarius, Tim, Will, Leebneding, Andrew, Chad, Austin, Kelly, Richard, Matt, and John- you owe for your tuxedo.  Please pay by cash or check (Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters) as soon as possible or contact me if you plan to use fundraising or need assistance with you with these costs.

Girls dresses are ordered and pending delivery.  The final cost came out to $65 per dress.  The 4 girls who needed a tall size please add $5.  Please make payment by cash or check (Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters) as soon as possible or contact me if you plan to use fundraising to help with costs.  All dresses will ship without a bottom hem and some may need minor alterations.  If you are willing and able to help with this, please let me know, otherwise, I encourage girls to get to a tailor as soon as possible to ensure the best fit.

October 11-15

Welcome back!  I hope that you were able to relax a bit and spend some time with family and friends during the furlough week.  If you missed the news, my family grew by one this week!  Check out my previous post about Owen for that info.  There is much coming up this week, so please note the following-

Tour contracts are now due!  I have very few contracts and need these contracts to book our travel.  Please get this in ASAP or contact me directly with questions.  All the info is here on the tour page of my blog.

Thanks to the following parents-  Mrs. Linvill, Mrs. Liebscher, Mrs. Kanga, Mr. Daley, Mr. Rossi, Mrs. McDougal and Mrs. Hoefer all helped on Friday, October 1 measure for dresses and distribute tuxes.  The day would not have gone smoothly without their help.  Thanks so much!

Speaking of parent involvement, we have our October Booster meeting on Thursday at 6:00 in the Faculty Dining Room (left of the PAC).  This is just under an hour and covers all the business of the music & drama programs including funding.  This is followed at 7:00 by a brief PTSA meeting and then the first Big Band Dance planning meeting at 7:30 in the band room.  Many of you have indicated that you are willing to help and be involved.  We have a critical need for parent involvement on the Boosters board as well as with the Big Band Dance group.  It seems like a long night, but it's just one night and in the company of friends, the time will pass quickly!  I look forward to seeing you there.

Wind Ensemble, Concert Band & Jazz Band boys all got their tuxes before the furlough.  There were several boys who forgot their money at that time.  Those boys will need to make payments to the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters for the amount due on their tux.  If you have questions, please let me know.  Also, Jazz Band boys should have paid their $20 for the tie by now.

Orchestra tuxes will be delivered Friday this week.  Boys will need to make payments to Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters by Friday.  No tux will be distributed without payment.

We will begin our first fundraising effort this week and next.  This is a very easy fundraiser through the We Care Coffee Company.  Students will have the opportunity to sell custom ground Pioneer Music coffee and cookies.  Students can request one of two grab bags- one is just coffee and has 10 12 oz bags of medium, French roast and decaf.  The coffee is already in the bag and sells for $12 and the student earns 50% as profit to offset any of his or her expenses ($60).  The other grab bag includes four bags of coffee ($12 ea) and four bags of chocolate chip cookie mix ($13 ea) and also earns 50% profit $50).  Once we get rolling, students will also have the opportunity to sell items through the website to friends and family across the country and also earn credit.  There are no returns on the bags, though, so plan your order carefully and know that we can always order more.  All students requesting grab bags need to turn in this request form.  The best part of this sale is that there is NO brochure, and NO waiting to collect money!  We will have several fundraising opportunities this year, this is just the first.  For more info, attend the Booster meeting Thursday @ 6:00.

Friday, October 15 is our second football game of the year!  Call time will be 6:00 for the 7:00 game and students are reminded that they are expected to wear khaki color pants.  It doesn't matter to me the style; dockers, denim or slacks- just the color.  This time around, we will have a pregame party as soon as school gets out with games and activities in and around the band room.  While not required, it is encouraged as this is a great time for students to get to know other students in the band program.  Please plan to attend and cheer on the band and Mustang football!

September 27- October 1

Can you believe it's October this week?  With six weeks down, each ensemble has made great progress and most students should have several pieces of music in their folder that they are practicing.  While I don't require a practice card, I do expect that students will practice a minimum of 30 minutes five times a week.  Students who need extra help can come in before or after school and I will be happy to help them with whatever they need.  Parents, you can be a great help by making sure your student is practicing outside of class time.

Just a reminder that the tour details are online as well as the tour contract.  It is due when we return from furlough, but it would help out greatly if you could turn it in this week.  Get the info here.

In the ongoing saga of performing attire, boys who were measured in the first round (most of Wind Ensemble and Concert Band) will receive their tuxedos at the end of this week!  Orchestra and those who were measured later will receive theirs after the furlough.  Again, families will pay Selix Formalwear directly $120 for a tux or $125 with shoes.  Students who requested only specific pieces will pay for those as agreed.  Girls will be measured for their dresses this week.  The dress will be $59 plus taxes or shipping, as necessary.  We will pay for the dresses in one invoice and students will pay the Music/ Drama Boosters upon delivery.

We will have our next Music/ Drama Boosters meeting on Thursday, October 14.  Our general meeting will take place at 6:00 in the faculty dining room (to the left of the PAC).  This will be followed by a PTSA meeting at 7.  As soon as that is over, we will have our first Big Band Dance planning meeting of the year.  Many of you indicated that you want to help and be involved- this is the way to do it!  It seems like a long night, but we'll have a good time together and it's better than multiple nights out.  Many hands make light work.  I look forward to seeing you there!

On Wednesday, November 10 at 7:00, the Pioneer Performing Arts department will present our annual Veterans' Day tribute.  This year we will feature Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Choirs and selected readings performed by drama students.  Be sure to invite friends and family members who have served or currently serve.

I will be assigning ensemble seating this week.  While I do not do challenges for seating, I do change seating at times and for various pieces.  The most important thing that I consider as I place students is their ability and the balance of the section.  There will be playing tests throughout the semester and some of those may result in seating changes, but others may not.  All students must remember that none of us is better than any part of piece of music which I we will play.  We are all in music first and foremost to make great music.

Next week is furlough week.  More info is here from SJUSD Superintendent Dr. Matthews.

On a personal note, my wife and I are expecting our second child on October 3.  As you know, he could come later tonight, or in three weeks.  In the event I miss class, students will still be expected to work on their music.  I will try to post something to let everyone know, but that may not be among the first things I think of as we head to the hospital.  I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

September 20-24

Pep Band kicked off the season with a great showing at Friday's game against Terra Nova High School.  The band had a great time and provided some great music through the evening.  If you missed us, make sure to catch our next performance at the next Pioneer home football game on Friday, October 15.  If you have pictures or video to share- jump to the Pioneer Band and Orchestra Facebook page and post them there!

All grades on the PIV accurately reflect the first grading period.  If you have questions about individual grades, please contact me.  Regarding participation, students with excused absences can make up their missed points with 30 minutes of practice time for each day missed before school (6:45-7:15) or after school (after 6th or 7th).  There will still be a lower grade for the week where participation was missed, but the week where the student does the makeup will show the extra points. Students who miss on a Friday must make up their listening assignment the week they return.  Failure to complete makeup work promptly may result in a deduction for doing the work late.

Boys in Orchestra will be measured for tuxes on Tuesday.  This is also the day that any boys in band must be measured.  Please remember that students must pay for tuxes upon delivery- $120/ $125 with shoes to Selix Formalwear.  I will let you know when the tuxes will be delivered.  Jazz Band boys will get their ties this week and will need to pay $20 to the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters.

We have set the price and a preliminary itinerary for our Spring Tour 2011.  Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra and Advanced Choir will travel April 8-11, 2011 (Friday- Monday).  Student price will be $500 and chaperone price will be $425.  Some of you may see this price as higher than in previous years and that is largely due to increased transportation costs.  Please check out the Tour 2011 page for complete details!

This week, all Pep Band ensembles will be back to performing regular ensemble literature.  Please make sure you have all of your music together in a binder or folder and a pencil with you every day!  We will get some more music next week and spend a few days reviewing football music then.

Football!

Our first football game is tomorrow night, September 17!  The game has been pushed back to 7:30, so I am setting the call time at 6:30 dressed and ready to perform in the band room.  With the delayed start time, the game is likely to last until about 9:30.  Come out to support the band and Mustang football!

Sunday, September 12, 2010

September 13-17

Let's get ready for football!  Pep Band (Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band) will be performing at Friday night's game.  Call time for students will be about 5:30-6:00 (I'll send out more info when it's set).  The game kicks off at 7 and usually goes till about 9-9:30.  The room will be open for students after school.  I know that this is a change of plans, and some families may have made arrangements which cannot be changed.  If this is the case, please email me ASAP so that I can excuse your student.  For the rest of the regularly scheduled games, the only excuse from football is a school required game or performance.  There is no excused absence from any of our 'formal' performances.  I'll be distributing music this week in flip folders, but students will need to purchase a lyre for their instrument.  These can be found at most music shops.  Student will need their PHS Band polo and/ hooded sweatshirt.  Students who ordered these must pay for them before I pass them out- $15/ polo and $25/ hoodie.  Checks should be made out to "Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters."  Cash is also acceptable.  Please ask your student to keep all receipts!

Financial reminder- Several families have asked for clarifications about costs and donations.  There are several items for which I solicit donations.  I ask that all students who use a school instrument, including percussionists make a $50 Instrument Donation.  I also ask that all students in Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Orchestra make a $25 Festival donation.  This helps offset the cost of attendance and transportation at CMEA and other smaller music festivals (excluding our spring tour).  These are both donations, and while not required, your support is integral to the success of the program.  Then there are costs like performing attire.  The football polo ($15) and hooded sweatshirt ($25) are required and students who ordered them must pay for them this week.  Dresses for the girls will cost $60-$80 (pending final taxes and shipping).  Tuxedos will cost $120 ($125 w/ shoes).  All payments can be by cash or check (to "Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters") and will get a receipt.  The only exception is the tux which will be paid directly to Selix Formalwear.  There will be several fundraising opportunities this year to help those with financial need.  If your family needs extra help, let me know so that we can develop a plan that works for your family.

This week wraps up the end of the first grading period.  Remember that student grades at this point are based on participation and written work.  There may also be one playing test grade entered, which will be in the performance category.  Jazz Band has completed scale tests, Wind Ensemble & Orchestra will complete scale tests this week and Beginning Band will be tested on line #12.  The key to success is to show up, be on task in rehearsal and do the listening.

At Back-to-School Night, I mentioned that we needed parent involvement with the Music/ Drama Boosters.  Our next meeting is October 14.  Many of you indicated interest, please send along your information to me so that I can contact you directly with important info.  Remember, we are looking for leaders and workers; people who can lead projects as well as those who are willing to work on various projects.  Note that I've put a boosters page on my blog to host information for anyone interested.  Please note the eScrip information as well- that is the easiest way you can help!

September 7-10

I hope that you had a good time this extended weekend with family and friends. We have a short week, but still plenty going on in the Pioneer Bands & Orchestra!

It was exciting to see so many of you on Thursday night at Back-to-School night!  I hope that I was able to share some of my vision and excitement for the year and the future of the program.  If you have questions resulting in the information I presented, or anything else related to the classes, please contact me.  I do want to highlight two things- first, we are looking for parents to be involved in many different capacities with the music boosters.  Please let me know if you are able to help in this way.  Second, we cannot function without your financial support.  We are looking to make up a $6,500 donation gap for the purchase of our orchestra instruments.  All donations to the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters are fully tax deductible as we are a 501(c)3 non-profit.  Please consider a donation in support of your child's music education.

Tuesday the boys in Orchestra will be fitted for their tuxes.  All boys in band who missed their fitting last week must attend.  Tuxes will cost $120 or an extra $5 for boys who need their shoes.  A reminder that Jazz Band boys will need their tux and a black dress shirt.  We have ordered ties which will come in at a cost of $20 each.  Ties will be purchased directly from the band.

Students in Wind Ensemble & Orchestra should have a 3-ring binder to keep all their music in.  I have already handed out several pieces, and this week will continue to do so.  It is imperative that all students have all the music so that they will be able to practice outside of class time.  Students will also begin to look at some of the music for football games this week and will need a lyre and flip folder for their instrument if they do not already have one.  These can be purchased from any of the local music shops.

Polo shirts and hoodies are ordered and will be delivered this week!  Students will need to pay $15 for the polo and $25 for the hoodie before they receive them.  Students who plan to use fund raising or need extra help with these costs need to let me know ASAP.

Did you know? Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters works with eScrip?  This is a FREE and EASY way for you to support our work by registering your Safeway club card and other cards as you see fit.  It costs you NOTHING as companies donate a portion of your purchase to eScrip who then gives money to participating organizations, like the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters.  Visit the eScrip website for more info and to sign up.  We are group #154010291.  You can also fill out a paper registration form here (pdf).

Finally, please check the PIV.  I am working to keep grades as accurate as possible.  FYI, blank grades are assignments I've not completed, "Z" grades are items not submitted by the student and any grade with a number is the grade the student earned.  For participation scores, absences may create a low grade one week, but when the student does his or her make-up time, the grade that week will be higher.  If you notice something that you don't understand regarding grades, please let me know so that we can work out any questions promptly.

August 30- September 3

Things are off to a great start this year!  This week is a busy week with quite a bit going on for everyone to be aware of.

On Monday, Beginning Band students will get their instruments.  Not all students may get their first choice, but they will be able to get their first or second.  Once the student has returned the instrument contract, he or she may take the instrument home to practice.  All students need to purchase "Standard of Excellence" Book 1 (the red book) for their instrument and whatever supplies are appropriate.  I sent a list home with the students, including fliers for a few local music dealers.

On Wednesday, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band & Jazz Band boys who need a tuxedo will be fitted by a representative from Selix.  We are still arranging a time soon for the boys in the Orchestra.  Boys will be able to purchase everything they need directly from Selix.  More details will be available soon.

At the end of the week, we will look at dress samples for girls in Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Orchestra.  Girls will have an option to select between four different dresses.  Each ensemble will have an opportunity to vote for the dress of their choice.  I hope that Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will share a dress so that girls can use the same dress as they move up.  Jazz Band girls will use the same dress from last year.  Ordering information has been discussed in class.

Students have elected to continue the same band polo & hoodie for football games from previous years.  Students will sign-up for new items as needed at a cost of $15 for the polo and $25 for the hoodie.

All students have grades entered into the gradebook.  If you see a "Z" entered, that means the student has not turned anything in to me.  A student who earns a grade of "F" will have some grade entered.  Students also want to know about make-up participation points from absences.  Students can make-up points from absences by coming in after school and practicing for 30 minutes per excused absence.  Unexcused absences receive no makeup.  Students also can earn 10 points extra credit if at least one parent attends Back to School Night on Thursday, September 2 at 5:30.  I look forward to meeting as many new parents as I can!

Please remember that students using a school instrument are asked to make a $50 donation to the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters.  This helps us to keep and maintain a quality inventory.  For those worried about finances, we will begin fundraisers soon.  Most fundraisers give students credit directly for individual expenses like outfits and travel.

Hope that you and your family have settled into a successful routine for this school year.  See you Thursday at Back-to-School Night!

August 23-27

The music making has begun in all of the instrumental music classes here at Pioneer!  From Beginning Band trying to play assorted brass instruments last week to Wind Ensemble & Jazz Band starting to work through the music library to Concert Band's work on fundamentals and the first sounds of strings at Pioneer in nearly twenty years, it is an exciting time of music making.  I'm excited to be a part of this program and hope that you are too.

Instruments- All students (except Beginning Band) should now have a school instrument and should have returned a signed contract for that instrument.  Remember, we ask that all students using school instruments, including all percussion, make a $50 donation to the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters to offset the cost of keeping and maintaining our inventory.  There are several students who will be learning new instruments this year to help their ensembles be better balanced.  Those students are not expected to pay for their instrument, and will also be given extra help after school.

Listening- Students are reminded that they must submit their weekly listening logs every Monday in class.  Any student who misses Friday's listening in class must make it up upon return to class.  We listen first thing every Friday in class- don't miss it!

Outfits- At the end of this week all boys needing a tux will be fitted by a rep from Selix Formalwear.  The tux will be purchased directly from Selix at a cost of about $125.  Girls will be selecting their ensemble dresses later this week as well.  Once selected, we will begin the sizing and ordering process.  I hope to keep cost between $50-$80.  We also may change the Pep Band polo shirt this year.  Once that has been decided, we will begin to place orders for all students.  We hope to cap the price for the polo at $15 and the hoodie or windbreaker at $25.

Payments- Any time your student makes a payment or donation of any kind, I will issue a receipt.  Please keep all receipts for your records in the event of questions about payments.

Performances- We will have our first performances as a Pep Band at the Football games on October 15 & 29 and November 12.  November 12 is senior night, and I look forward to recognizing the outstanding contributions of the seniors in the bands.  Remember, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band are all required to participate in the football games.  There are a few other events this semester, and I'll post more about them as they draw near.

Spring Tour- is tentatively scheduled for April 8-11 in LA.  We cannot leave until CST testing is concluded on Friday, and will continue our trip into the first weekend of spring break.  As of now, Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble are scheduled to travel, but there is a chance that Orchestra may travel with us, as well.  Please block off this weekend in your schedule.  No details are confirmed yet.

Students have selected Student Leaders from each ensemble.  These students will work with me throughout the year both to help me and help their classmates.  These student leaders are examples for the new students to follow and are held to higher standards than other members of the ensemble and will be expected to assist me in various tasks throughout the year.

August 16-20

Twas the night before classes and all through the halls
not a student was stirring, they were all at the malls.
The backpacks were hung by the front door with care
in hopes that the school books soon be lighter than air.
The students were nestled all snug in their beds
while texting and messaging, leaving nothing unsaid.

OK, so the creative juices aren't flowing that well.  I sure am excited, though, about the first week of class!  Each week I will post information for students and parents about the upcoming week and any assignments or events or anything else of note.  Please subscribe to this blog and join our facebook group so that you are always up on the latest news for the Pioneer Band & Orchestra.

This week, I will introduce my vision and expectations for the Pioneer Band & Orchestra to the students.  I will present long-term and short term goals, as well as introduce a Student Leadership structure.  In some of the ensembles, we will be able to begin to play, but in beginning band, we will be introducing the basics of music.
Monday- after a few introductions and administrative issues, I will distribute the "First Things" survey.  This survey will either be completed in class, or completed Monday night at home and returned Tuesday.
Tuesday- begin instrument checkout in Jazz Band/ Wind Ensemble.  Student Leadership, day 1
Wednesday- continue instrument checkout, finalize student leadership.  First day with instruments?
Thursday- on instruments?
Friday- each class will do its first listening log.  Every student needs to have a composition book (75 pages, bound notebook- like math) in class on Friday.  The first several listening assignments will be completed during class time.

I will not distribute my full Instrumental Music Handbook (course syllabus) for a few days, but look for it later this week or early next week.  The Handbook will cover several financial issues.  First, all families are encouraged to be a part of the Pioneer Music/ Drama Boosters.  There is a suggested $30 donation for membership.  Second, all instrumental students are asked to make a $25 donation to cover festival expenses for the year (CMEA, etc.).  Third, and new this year, students who use school instruments, including percussion, are asked to make a $50 donation to help cover the high cost of maintenance of our inventory.  The more money we can raise this way, the more money students can keep credited to them when they participate in fundraisers.  If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact me.

One Week!

All the school supplies are on sale and the pool is not so crowded.  This can only mean one thing- school is just around the corner.  With just one week left till classes start, take a look at what's been boing on-
  • 12 violins, 5 violas, 12 celli, 3 basses purchased (pick up 8/14)
  • 2 cello racks and 1 bass rack constructed
  • SJUSD repair budget has been secured
  • All Big Band dance props and much of our other equipment has been moved out into a storage shed to make way for the new orchestra equipment
  • All instruments are in the process of being cleaned, inspected & inventoried
  • All music in the library in the process of being cataloged
So it doesn't seem like that many points, but it sure has been a significant investment of time, which will continue throughout the year.  If you are in need of community service time- I will have plenty of work to be done!

I will be on campus all week this week, including during registration/ orientation.  If you have any questions about scheduling or ensemble placement, please stop by and introduce yourself.  Also, if you can spare an hour, I could use your help getting ready for the first day.  I hope to meet many students and families before school starts.

A Midsummer Day's Events

T-25 days until the first day of school!

Summer continues to roll on past us, and I have an exciting piece of news to share with you- thanks to an extraordinary donation, we are able to purchase instruments to start our orchestra program!  Much of what we may need is on order to be picked up on Saturday, August 14.  I will be in need of parents with vans who can help us pick up those instruments at Kamimoto Strings (4th and Jackson) so that we can be ready for the start of school on the 16th.  There is still a gap between what the donation covers and the total cost, so we will be looking for additional support to continue to fund this program.  I'll post more about that as the school year approaches.

I look forward to meeting the students of the Pioneer Bands and Orchestra and their families.  I will be on campus in my room during orientation/ schedule pick-up the week before school starts to meet students and families and to answer any questions you might have.

If you haven't joined our Pioneer Band & Orchestra group on facebook, what are you waiting for? Please share it with your friends as well so that we can get the word out about what's going on.

Summer Update 1

It was great to see so many students and families turn out in support of Mr. DeMar last Saturday.  Not only was he a colleague of mine, but he was one of my teachers- doing student teaching while I was a student at Castillero and as a private instructor for a short time.  I was proud to be able to perform with so many other alumni and raise money for Joe.  I also got to meet current and former Pioneer students that evening.  Good job to all who performed!  Be sure that you check out their website.

I have created a Pioneer Band & Orchestra group on facebook.  If you would like to connect, be sure to join the group!  Also, please invite friends, family and other alumni to join so that they can also know what is going on.  We have a busy summer as we plan events to raise funds for our new orchestra as well as other activities in room 107.

Remember to follow this blog and be in the know about what's going on here at Pioneer.  I will be asking for help off and on here at Pioneer this summer and I would appreciate all the help I can get.  Have a great summer and keep practicing!

Summer!

Hooray! Hooray! We're on our way! Our summer vacation starts today! (thanks, Berenstain Bears) OK, so it's only 10 weeks plus a 3 day weekend, but why would I put a damper on your excitement? While many students will try to spend as little time as possible thinking about the 2010-2011 school year, I will be working to equip a new orchestra and plan a school year for a great band program (no small task). I'll spend some time working for the family business, and plan to have at least a few adventures with Hannah and Melissa.

I have designed this blog to serve as a bridge for Pioneer Band & Orchestra students, families and others with an interest in following what's going in the Pioneer Instrumental Music department. This summer we'll have activities to raise the funds needed to outfit our new orchestra, so I'll let you know about that and I'd love to meet you there. Also, throughout the school year I will keep current class activities, performances, assignments and all the information you will need as a student, parent or fan of the Pioneer Band & Orchestra. You can also join our "Pioneer Band & Orchestra" group on Facebook to interact with other students, families, alumni and the Pioneer community.

Here's to a great summer! I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months and a great 2010-2011 school year!
