This is a busy week!
Big Band Dance is this Saturday night! Make sure you get your tickets and bring your checkbook- we've got an outstanding silent auction lined up! Students who want to profit on the raffle must return their tickets and money on Tuesday by the end of school. All raffle tickets sold after that date will be directed to the ensemble account. All Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band students will be required to work one shift Friday afternoon/ evening, Saturday morning or for cleanup after. Seniors can sign up Monday after school, Juniors Tuesday, Sophomores Wednesday and Freshmen on Thursday.
Jazz Band will be performing in the CMEA Jazz Festival on Friday morning. Students and parent drivers are to meet at PHS at 7:15. Students may not drive themselves to this performance. Thanks to Mrs. Linvill and Mrs. Higa who have volunteered to drive. We are looking for 2-3 more drivers. All the info is here.
This Thursday is our February Booster meeting at 7:30 in the Faculty Dining Room. Come out and work with these parents as they strive to support the Music/ Drama programs at Pioneer. Plus, you'll know what's going on without your student intercepting the message. The final Big Band Dance meeting will follow this at about 8:05.
Rehearsals have begun for 42nd Street! We are working hard and trying to get all of our music ready by opening night. Students involved are reminded that they must be practicing their music so that we can have the most productive rehearsals possible.
This week, students participating in our tour will have the opportunity to sign up for rooms. All rooms are to be 4 students, and students may share with students from other ensembles. The final payment will be due next Friday, February 11. This will give students a chance to review their final fundraising profits. We are still looking for a few more parent chaperones. Interested parents should contact me as soon as possible or send in their $250 deposit. Complete tour details, as we know them, are on my blog.

January 24-28
The countdown has begun! Just 2 weeks until Big Band Dance! Get all the *updated* details on the Big Band Dance page on my blog and use our Facebook event to invite friends and family! Students can continue to sell raffle tickets this week earning 80% of the proceeds directly into their student account! Make sure your student takes home some raffle tickets this week as all proceeds or unsold tickets must be returned by Tuesday, February 1. Be sure to get your ticket order form in to avoid waiting in line at the event. In addition to great music, dancing and snacks, we have a great set of silent auction prizes lined up this year! Whatever your interest- sports, arts, hotels, meals out, you will find a package that interests you! Bring your checkbook and get a great prize while supporting your Pioneer Instrumental Music program!
Jazz Band will participate in CMEA Jazz Festival on Friday, February 4. Get all the details at my previous post. Jazz Band students will also perform on this Thursday, January 27 at 6:45 in the gym for the Pioneer recruitment night. Students are to be dressed in their formal performing attire at 6:15 and will be done at 7:00, just in time to head back to the band room for 42nd Street rehearsal. This is a required performance, and a great chance to showcase the ensemble and program to prospective Pioneer families.
Rehearsals for 42nd street begin today! This is a fun show with a great jazz style book. Students interested should come to the first rehearsal tonight- Monday, January 24 from 7-9. More info on the 42nd Street page here.
Next week will be our February Boosters meeting as well as our final Big Band Dance planning meeting. Boosters starts at 7:30 and the BBD meeting will follow that immediately at about 8:00. Do you have experience with accounting or bookkeeping? We are looking for a new parent to serve as treasurer in the coming year, and it will make the transition much smoother to observe for a short while. This is a critical job and does require some time, but is by no means too much to handle for the right person. If you are interested in this, or just in finding out more about how you can take an active role supporting your student's music education, join us!

CMEA Jazz Festival
The Pioneer Jazz Band will perform in the CMEA Jazz Festival on Friday, February 4 at Santa Teresa High School. We must be at Santa Teresa by 7:45am for our warm-up. Because this is a school field trip, students are NOT permitted to drive themselves for this event. As such, all students are required to be at Pioneer, dressed and in the band room by 7:15am. We will need parent drivers who can drive us to Santa Teresa at that time, and who will be able to return us to Pioneer at about 10:00. Students will miss periods 1-3, but since Jazz Band is 3rd, they are only out of 2 classes. If you are able to drive, please contact me ASAP. I realize that many students normally drive themselves to school in the morning, but because this is a school field trip, student drivers are not allowed. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. It may also be possible for you to drive your student directly to STHS (arrive at 7:30) if I have a note stating that by Tuesday, February 1. They will ride back with us after the festival.
The CMEA Jazz festival is free and open to the public. There are many good bands performing Friday and Saturday, and I encourage students to take advantage of the opportunity and see some live jazz! Plus, watching 2 groups would make a good live review. I know it's Big Band Dance weekend, though, so many of you will be covering shifts working for that.
Contact me if you have any questions about this schedule.

Big Band Dance is coming up quickly! Be sure to invite your family and friends to this great event. Be sure you share our Facebook event with your friends and get the word out! Are you looking to raise money? Students who sell raffle tickets by February 1 will earn 80% of all funds directly to their account. This is a great way to get support from friends, family and neighbors who may not be able to attend or donate large amounts of money, but still want to support your student and our program. Not a member of our Facebook group? Join us!
We are also looking for parents of underclassmen who would like to be involved in leading and planning the event for next school year. We will have our last planning meeting for this year Thursday at 7:30 in my classroom. This is our most important fundraiser and we have a great team of parents to work with, and some of the jobs do not require a huge commitment of time or energy.
How would you like a fun filled trip to Disneyland? Join us as a chaperone on our music trip! We are looking for a few more parents to round out our list. Let me know ASAP if you are interested.
Did you attend the County Honor Band concert? You must turn in your Live Review this week in order to earn the double credit. Do not wait to submit your form and get your extra credit!
Do you plan to audition for the cast of 42nd Street? Plan to attend auditions Tuesday or Wednesday from 7-10 in the PAC. If you plan to play in the pit orchestra, plan to attend our first rehearsal on Monday the 24th from 7-9. More info is on my 42nd Street page.
Jazz Band has 2 events coming up. First, Jazz Band will play at the PHS recruitment night on Thursday next week (27th) at 6:45 in the gym for current 8th grade families looking into Pioneer. Our call time will be 6:15, dressed to perform. We will go right into 42nd Street rehearsal following the performance. Secondly, we will perform at CMEA Jazz festival on Friday, February 4 at Santa Teresa HS. We are second up, and so will be there early in the morning and return to school during 3rd period. Students will only miss their first and second period classes (Jazz Band is 3rd). I'll make a separate posting with more details soon.
I want to remind students who miss class that they will loose participation points. A student with an excused absence may makeup those points by coming in before school (6:45-7:15) or after school for 30 minutes and practicing or helping with the many projects going on. Also, students who miss a listening log on a Friday must make that up as well.
Finally, I will be out of school on Friday to attend a funeral. During this time, Jazz Band students will be working on their combos. There will not be a listening journal assignment this week.

January 3-7
Happy New Year! Welcome to the Spring Semester
I hope that you and your family had a restful time together these two weeks off of school. The month of January will be a busy one as we are gearing up for our Big Band Dance in Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. I have created a page with all of the info you need here on my blog that includes information about tickets, auction items and anything else you may want to know. Please check out the info there and send it to your friends and family who may also want to attend. This month, there are free dance lessons offered to all Pioneer families to get ready for the BBD. Get all the info on the Big Band Dance page.
The next $100 payment for our LA Trip is due this week. All students and chaperones should have paid $250 to this point. I will make account statements to send home next week. The balance due for students will be $250 and chaperones $175. We are still looking for several chaperones, please contact me if you are interested.
Our January Music/Drama Booster meeting will be this Thursday, January 6 at 7:30 in the Faculty Dining Room. We had a better turnout at our December meeting, and I look forward to continuing that momentum as we continue to work on plans for various activities. There will be a Big Band Dance committee meeting immediately following the booster meeting in my room.
Looking to get a head start on your Live Review for this semester? All band students who review the Santa Clara County Honor Band concert on Sunday, January 16 at 2:00 at Evergreen Valley HS will get double credit (up to 50 extra credit points). Tickets can be purchased at the door for $8 students/ $10 adults.
